Under a contract with the M.K. Yangel Pivdenne Design Bureau State Enterprise, the Institute’s researchers collected and processed biographical and photographic material on the history of rocket and space science and technology. In 2018, much of the Institute’s work involved preparing publications to mark the centenary of the NAS of Ukraine: “NAS of Ukraine: A Chronology, 1918–2018”, “NAS of Ukraine: Outstanding Achievements, 1918–2018” and “NAS of Ukraine: Membership, 1918–2018”. These publications include extensive material on rocket and space research: key events and facts associated with individual institutes and researchers of the NAS of Ukraine; their contributions to these fields; biographies of leading scientists and designers who were Academy members; and archival documents from the early development of these fields. Articles by A.S. Lytvynko and O.M. Korniienko, both Doctors of Sciences in History, specifically address the contribution of Academy institutes to the rocket and space sector and were submitted for publication by the Pivdenne Design Bureau. A concept was developed for a two-volume work, “The History of Rocket and Space Science, Technology and Industry in Ukraine in Global and Sociopolitical Contexts”. The first volume covers Ukraine’s rocket and space sector from the 1950s to the present through its key achievements—ideas, theories, concepts, design solutions and products—within a periodisation that places them against global advances and sociopolitical developments. The second volume is planned as a reference work with two sections: encyclopaedic entries on the institutes, organisations and enterprises involved in establishing and developing the sector, including design bureaus, research institutes, industrial enterprises, factories and universities; and biographies of leading scientists, designers, production specialists and managers who have worked or continue to work in the rocket and space sector.
