The role of gender for entrepreneurship in a transition context. In: Entrepreneurship, competitiveness and local development. Frontiers in European entrepreneurship research. Edited by Luca Iandoli, Hans Landström and Mario Raffa. EE, September 2007, pp. 223–251. (Chapter ‘The role of gender in entrepreneurship in a transition economy’, in the monograph ‘Entrepreneurship, competitiveness and regional development: frontiers in European entrepreneurship research’.) (0.8 printed sheets).

The authors investigate characteristics of female entrepreneurship in transition context including motivation for starting business, business performance and main barriers to success in an unfavourable environment. Empirical data were collected in a sociological survey in Ukraine and Moldova, which sample included both female entrepreneurs and a control group of male entrepreneurs. Gender differences identified concerned fewer resources available for women to start-up a company, lower level of embeddedness of female entrepreneurs in business community and more family-related motives for doing business. The authors conclude that gender plays an important role for business survival and female business owners constitute a significant potential for the development of private entrepreneurship in transition countries.

1. Sociological sciences. Chirkov V. G. Sample survey. Popular essays. – Kyiv.: Phoenix. (5.35 printed pages)

The book of essays, written in a popular form, contains the main stages of the survey of enterprises using the sampling method. The proposed refined method of determining the sample size is presented.
